A Brief History
Alberton has a rich history in South Africa's gold mining sector. General Alberts named the town Alberton after himself and the home town of the original farm owners, Prins Albert in the Cape Colony.
Alberton became a municipality in 1939. The street names in Alberton North were named after Voortrekker heroes. What began as a dusty farm in the East Rand has became a large industrial and urban area with an archaeological site and the Thokoza Monument Foundation Council (housing art, cultural industry and tourist business facilities).
Khumalo Street in Thokoza township was once the centre of violence between the Zulus and Xhosas just after the 1994 elections. The street is now a peaceful monument to the turmoil suffered by the residents of Thokoza.
