A Brief History
When Jan van Riebeeck ventured further into the country after landing in the Cape in 1652, he discovered this beautiful bay with long white beaches. Fredrik Ernst von Kamptz built a track along the coast all the way to Cape Town from Ravensteyn. Camps Bay was named after him.
Kloof Road was built around 1848 out of an urgent need for a safer passage over the mountain than the dangerous narrow track leading to the bay.
Due to its poor accessibility at the time, Camps Bay remained undeveloped many years after its discovery until a syndicate developed the area. The resultant property boom caused the formation of a committee to ensure that developments on the beachfront did not exceed three storeys, thus preserving sweeping ocean views in Camps Bay.
Camps Bay Attractions
Although the beachfront is usually swarming with people during those hot summer days, it really comes alive just as the sun sets.
Many flock to the beachfront clubs and restaurants for early evening cocktails and light meals to watch the sun set over the Atlantic. Soon the clubbing begins with an array of hip-hop, dance, house and jazz clubs.
