Sandton also now houses the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and many large companies have relocated to Sandton including Nedcor, South African Breweries and Rand Merchant Bank.

One of Sandton’s must-see attractions is Nelson Mandela Square, formerly Sandton Square, which showcases a 6-metre bronze statue of the former president.  This upmarket suburb contains many five star hotels as well as the new Michelangelo Towers adjacent to the fabulous Michelangelo Hotel with exclusive apartments and penthouses.

A Brief History

Sandton has a history that apparently dates back to the Early Stone Age as fossils have been excavated on many sites. From then, Sandton became a small farming community after the first settlers arrived and about 120 years ago George Harrison first struck gold near what turned out to be the richest gold field in the world.

The discovery of gold transported Sandton into the limelight, attracting numerous settlers. From then on it grew and wealthy estates were built around the area. Sandton's transformation into one of the wealthiest towns in Africa began with the launch of Sandton City in 1973. Sandton City extended to include Sandton Square, renamed the Nelson Mandela Square, and has developed into the largest shopping centre in Southern Africa.
