A Brief History

Jan van Riebeeck arrived at the Cape in 1652 when the 'strandlopers' (beachcombers) inhabited the areas around False Bay and Somerset West. A village formed around a church established by Lord Charles Somerset in 1817. It later became known as Somerset West so that it was not to be confused with Somerset East in the Eastern Cape.

The town became famous in the 1960’s for having the second biggest dynamite factory in the world!

Somerset West has something for everyone. There are 3 world-class golf courses, a pistol shooting range and various sports clubs facilities such as cricket, soccer and bowls clubs.

The Country Craft Market is popular for unique African souvenirs and features about 150 stalls. The Firlands Farm Stall is also a great place for family fun and has a mini-golf course, pub and coffee shop.

Somerset West is popular for its old buildings like the old Pastorie that dates back to 1819, and the old bridge of Lourens River that was built in 1845. Vergelegen, established in 1700, is one of the oldest and best wine estates in the country.
