This picturesque ‘village’ is called the 'Republic of Hout Bay' by the locals due to its secluded, out-of-the-way location.

Chapman’s Peak Drive is a road that has awe-inspiring sea and mountain views, making commuting into the city a lovely experience. Hout Bay is naturally and culturally rich, being close to many golf courses, wine estates, theatres and art galleries.

A Brief History

There is evidence that Hout Bay's early inhabitants lived here around 100 AD and 500 AD, perhaps even as far back as the Late Stone Age 2000 years ago.

The first written account of the bay was recorded in 1607 by John Chapman, Master's Mate of the English boat Consent, who named the bay Chapman's Chaunce when he assessed the bay's potential as a harbour. In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck landed at the Cape and proclaimed the forest as the 'Finest in the World' then named it T' Houtbaaitjen (The Bay of Wood), which is now known as Hout Bay. Chapman's Peak Drive was named after John Chapman.

In the early 1900s, an abundance of crayfish was discovered and the Hout Bay Canning Company started exporting canned crayfish overseas. The first fish emporium in the country was Mariners Wharf, popular for its sought after lobster and fresh snoek and chips.
