A Brief History
Gordon’s Bay was named after 18th Century Dutch military officer, Colonel Robert Jacob Gordon, who initially named the area Combuis (Kitchen) because of its abundant game and fresh water.
The first Free Burghers received land in the area in 1678, and soon Gordon's Bay became a popular holiday and picnic area. From a small fishing village to a popular tourist destination, the area grew to become a municipality in 1961.

Gordon's Bay is famously known as water sport paradise, perfect for surfing, jet skiing, water skiing and windsurfing. It offers boat trips from the old harbour and deep-sea fishing in False Bay.
Mountain biking, hiking and road cycling are extremely popular here, with people flocking to the beautiful trails and challenging courses along the mountainside.
Along Clarence Drive, you can watch the Southern Right whales arriving at the Cape during June and November.
An iconic symbol of Gordon’s Bay is the big GB sign painted on a hill by the naval cadets in honour of General Botha.
