Sandhurst History

Hyde Park Shopping Centre was completed in 1969 and was the first fully enclosed decentralised shopping centre in the country. It was originally known as Hyde Park Corner because it was at the junction of William Nicol and Jan Smuts Avenue. The Saxon hotel used to be the home of Douw Steyn, the founder of Auto and General. He bought the stylish home in the 1980’s and named it the Saxon, which opened to the public in 2000.
