Roodepoort (“Red valley” in Afrikaans) has modern suburbs as well as many forms of industry now, such as farming, mining, agriculture and commercial and business activity.
Roodepoort Johannesburg History
This city was one of the first areas around the West Rand to strike gold. One half of the famous Strubens Brothers team, Fred Struben, found enough payable gold to mine here back in 1884.
The first form of government in the area came in form of the Goldfields Diggers Committee in 1886, which represented the farmers.
Roodepoort became a city in 1977. A few of the old buildings are still standing, like the Old House, old municipal offices (now the library and a national monument) and the Roodepoort Town School.
