A Brief History

Saxonwold was first known as Sachsenwald after Prince Bismarck's plantations in Germany and was part of Braamfontein Farm that was bought by Herman Eckstein around 1891. It became known as Saxonwold during the First World War and was established as a township in 1925.

The leafy suburb is famous for the many trees that line the streets, evidence of the first planting of the trees during the turn of the century by Eduard Lippert. All the street names in Saxonwold end in 'wold' like Cotswold, Griswold and Northwold, which are all Anglo-Saxon names.

One of the prominent features in Saxonwold is Zoo Lake, a man-made lake that was completed in 1908. Zoo Lake is famous for being the only place during the apartheid era open to people of all races. The lake is a popular destination for Johannesburg residents and is still a great place for picnics and boating.
